Updated CMIS site now available
-
After months of planning and work, the updated CMIS web site is now available. The basic functionality remains the same but several enhancements have been made. Several new data layers have been added (including aerial photos) and each map layer can now be toggled on or off. New search tools have been added, including Zoom to Address and Zoom to Coordinates. There are new tools for generating map output, map layers are available for download along with FGDC-compliant metadata and a Links page provides access to other information sources about coal mining.

Funding for this page is provided through a cooperative agreement between the Indiana Geological Survey and the Abandoned Mine Lands program of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Reclamation.
DNR closes caves over bat disease concerns
-
In response to growing concern for bat populations in other states that have been affected by White-nosed Syndrome, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources has closed public access to caves, sinkholes, tunnels and abandoned mines on DNR-owned land from May 1, 2009 through April 30, 2010.

Mine maps in your attic?
-
If you have any relatives or friends that might have worked in one of Indiana's historic coal mines, you might have a "gold mine" of information in your attic or closets.
The Indiana Geological Survey (IGS) is always in search of old coal mine maps and records to update the Indiana Coal Mine Information System. Many undocumented mine maps may be found in libraries, historical society's files, or personal files of former mine employees. If you know of any such maps or old mine company records (including photographs), please contact Licia Weber (e-mail: weber@indiana.edu) at the IGS, 611 N. Walnut Grove, Bloomington, IN 47405.
Any maps or records that are brought to our attention will be checked against our existing inventory. If any are found to be new and unrecorded information, they will be carefully scanned and the data entered into our system. All maps and records will be returned to their owners.
